New ranking of 13 undergraduate marine biology and marine science programs in California, Oregon, and Washington pairs named ocean degrees with cost after aid, completion, and career outcomes—not research prestige alone.
EDsmart has published its first Best Marine Biology and Marine Science Colleges on the West Coast ranking for 2026, covering undergraduate programs in California, Oregon, and Washington. Schools qualified only if they offer a named undergraduate marine credential, verified access to a marine lab, field station, or research vessel, and a current EDsmart overall grade. The list is ordered by student outcomes—completion, affordability, support, and career results—using publicly available U.S. Department of Education data.

University of California San Diego leads the list, followed by University of California Los Angeles and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Ranks 4 through 13 are the University of Southern California, the University of Washington, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, San José State University, the University of San Diego, California State University Long Beach, San Diego State University, UC Santa Cruz, and Oregon State University.
Unlike generic prestige lists, every school on the page has its degree name verified against the institution’s own catalog, and each school card links field stations and program pages so families can see where students actually get into the water.
Key Findings
UC San Diego and UCLA lead the ranking. Both cost about $12,500 a year after aid on average. Cal State Long Beach is the lowest-cost school among the top 13 at $10,440 after aid; USC is the highest-cost at $32,740.
Highest median earnings (10 years after enrollment) among the ranked schools are USC (about $92,500), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (about $90,800), and the University of San Diego (about $86,500).
The ranking includes programs often missing from national listicles—among them San José State’s marine biology pathway through Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, the University of San Diego’s Environmental and Ocean Sciences major (Marine Ecology pathway), and Oregon State University’s required term at Hatfield Marine Science Center.
Stanford is deliberately left off the ordered ranking. It has no undergraduate marine biology major or minor; the guide notes Hopkins Marine Station and graduate Oceans study for readers who arrive expecting Stanford.
“Most marine biology lists still rank prestige or research brand,” said Tyson Stevens, media contact for EDsmart. “We start with whether a named undergraduate marine degree actually exists, whether students can get ocean access, and how the school performs on completion, net price, and earnings. That is how University of San Diego shows up at No. 9—and why Oregon and Washington are not treated as an afterthought to California.”
