Solid Rock Community School Highlights Sanctuary at Solid Rock as a Living Classroom for Student Learning

While many schools rely solely on traditional classrooms to teach science, responsibility, and environmental stewardship, Solid Rock Community School is extending those lessons into a one-of-a-kind learning environment through Sanctuary at Solid Rock—a permanent home for rescued animals that also serves as a powerful educational resource for students.

More than simply observing animals, students have opportunities to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences that foster curiosity, compassion, responsibility, and critical thinking.

“Some of the most meaningful lessons a child will ever learn don’t come from a textbook,” said Michele Fasnacht, Founder of Solid Rock Community School. “They come from caring for living things, asking questions, solving real problems, and understanding that every action has an impact. Our sanctuary helps students experience those lessons in a way they will remember for the rest of their lives.”

Sanctuary at Solid Rock is home to rescued farm animals and exotic animals that have come from a variety of situations, including owner surrenders, neglect cases, and large-scale rescue efforts. The sanctuary works alongside animal rescues, shelters, law enforcement agencies, veterinarians, and nonprofit organizations to provide lifelong care for animals that cannot safely return to the wild or be placed in traditional homes.

These experiences naturally extend into the classroom.

Students explore biology, environmental science, conservation, animal behavior, sustainability, and responsible stewardship through meaningful, hands-on learning. Rather than simply reading about ecosystems or animal care, students have opportunities to observe, ask questions, make connections, and better understand the relationships between people, animals, and the environment.

The sanctuary also reinforces Compassionate Humane Education (CHE), the educational philosophy that guides learning throughout Solid Rock Community School. CHE encourages students to think critically, consider multiple perspectives, solve problems thoughtfully, and recognize that their choices have ripple effects extending beyond themselves.

School leaders believe these authentic experiences help students develop qualities that cannot always be measured by standardized tests, including empathy, resilience, responsibility, communication, collaboration, and confidence.

Earlier this year, Sanctuary at Solid Rock partnered with federal authorities and animal welfare organizations during one of the region’s largest exotic animal rescue operations, providing transportation, emergency care, and permanent sanctuary for rescued animals. Experiences like these give students a firsthand look at how compassion, science, teamwork, and community partnerships come together to improve the lives of both people and animals.

“Our goal isn’t to create memorable field trips,” Fasnacht added. “It’s to create meaningful educational experiences that inspire curiosity, compassion, and a lifelong desire to make a positive difference. When students see learning applied in the real world, education becomes something they experience—not something they simply memorize.”

By integrating academics with authentic experiences, Solid Rock Community School continues to demonstrate how education can prepare students not only for future careers, but for lives of purpose, responsibility, and meaningful contribution.
