LOVETTSVILLE, VA – The Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery, an ambitious initiative supported by the Global Humanities Foundation, is making remarkable progress through a dynamic collaboration with Virginia Tech’s Landscape Architecture students and faculty.

Situated on a picturesque 10-acre property at 13967 Berlin Turnpike in Lovettsville, VA, this project integrates environmental sustainability, cultural enrichment, and community engagement to create an unparalleled artistic and ecological landmark.

A Partnership for Innovation and Experience

Guided by Professor Terry Clements, FASLA, FCELA, PLA, Chair of the Landscape Architecture Program at Virginia Tech, alongside Dr. Vincenzo Cribari, Visiting Assistant Professor, and Jia Xu, Landscape Architect, MA, Visiting Scholar, the partnership provides students with invaluable hands-on design experience. Through immersive design labs, community outreach, and advanced research, students develop professional expertise while contributing to the creation of an inclusive and vibrant cultural space.

A Vision for Art, Culture, and Sustainability

The Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery aspires to be one of the largest sculpture gardens in the D.C. metro area, harmonizing art, nature, and viticulture. Located in Loudoun County’s renowned Capital Wine Country, it will showcase an extraordinary collection of sculptures and artworks from around the world, fostering artistic appreciation and community interaction.

The project features a variety of themed gardens, including:

• Community Vegetable Garden & Orchards
• Italian Renaissance & Persian Gardens
• French & Mediterranean Gardens
• Christmas Farm
• Chinese Ming Dynasty Rock Garden & Japanese Zen/Bonsai Pavilion
• Children’s Garden & Harmony Music Garden
• Culinary & Healing Garden
• Winery & Apiculture (Beekeeping)
• Veterans Rose Memorial Garden

These gardens will serve as a sanctuary promoting peace, harmony, and humanity, featuring works from award-winning artists recognized in prestigious exhibitions worldwide.

Virginia Tech’s Collaborative Engagement

The collaboration officially launched in January 2025, following an initial site visit in December 2024 by Professor Clements, Dr. Cribari, and Jia Xu. They engaged key stakeholders, including Tset Wong and Rose Hong, founders of the Global Humanities Foundation & Capital Sculpture Garden & Winery, and Angela Clark and Richard Haney, founders of Farm & Fish For Life.

A total of 27 Virginia Tech Landscape Architecture students are actively involved, designing master plans eligible for prestigious competitions. The project will progress through a series of structured community meetings:

1. Visioning Session – Initial site visit, defining goals and objectives.
2. Conceptual Design Phase – Site analysis, exploring spatial concepts, and identifying challenges.
3. Master Plan Refinement – Developing infrastructure, visitor circulation, and phased implementation.
4. Schematic Design Review – Presenting detailed garden layouts and planting selections.
5. Final Design Presentation – Showcasing completed master plans and design elements.

Additionally, students will embark on a three-day field study in the National Capital Region to gain insights from exemplary landscape projects.

Virginia Tech Innovation Center Design Presentations

In March 2025, students presented their conceptual site analyses and designs at the Virginia Tech Innovation Center in Alexandria, VA. Six teams showcased unique master plans, emphasizing various themes:

• Agri {Culture}: Connecting Art and Life – Presented by Halle Reinholtz, Jerry Nohr, Neera Naran, and Lilian Bell. This concept preserves the agricultural character of the land, blending farming and community programs while integrating local art into the landscape.
• Cultivating Cultures – Presented by Makena McLaughlin, Christian Hildebrandt, Daniela Cardoso-Plunkett, and Lilly Grossman. This design encourages engagement with global art and local agriculture, promoting sustainability and creating a sense of wonder through framed views and interactive spaces.
• Landscape as Art: Painting the Landscape – Presented by Jackson Kirsch, Acelyn Goris, and Charlotte Sincavage. The team emphasizes preserving agricultural land while celebrating culture and the arts, using carefully designed views to evoke famous paintings from around the world.
• Roots of the World – Presented by Niall Hamilton, Lindsay Schulwolf, Linus Standsbury, and Coleman Cook. This concept highlights the deep connections between culture, nature, and artistry, creating a space that transcends borders and serves as a cultural and educational landmark.
• Sculpted Views – Presented by Bryn Disther, Donicio Mencia, Alex DeNeal, and Larcyn Hess. The design integrates strong visual connections between art and industrial agriculture, providing a functional yet aesthetically pleasing visitor experience.
• Creating an Eye for Art – Presented by Jenny Seo, Aiden Scarlan, and Tony Manning. The team’s concept ensures the site is recognized as more than just a winery, incorporating diverse programs to attract visitors and enhance the artistic experience.

Distinguished attendees included Global Humanities Foundation founders Tset Wong and Rose Hong, board members, and supporters, alongside Virginia Tech faculty and students. Special guests included Dr. Samuel Lee Hancock, President & Executive Director of Emerald Planet International Foundation; Dr. Daman S. Walia, President/CEO of ARCTECH Inc.; celebrity designer Andre Soriano; Luigi Rosa, Vice President of Amtrak; Bill Lloyd, President of the Charitable PayRaise and several prominent business and industry leaders.
