MARIETTA, GA – Science fiction has long explored alien encounters, hidden government programs, and the fear of truths buried beneath official narratives. In Heaven and Earth, author Arturo Riojas uses those familiar ideas to examine something far more grounded in reality: environmental contamination and the consequences for human health of ignored chronic exposure to the carcinogenic heavy metal, cadmium.
The novel follows a complex chain of events involving alien visitors, covert investigations, government secrecy, and growing concerns surrounding cadmium contamination of food, water, and the environment. As extraterrestrial beings return to Earth to evaluate humanity’s progress, human characters, Olga Ramos and Cuauhtémoc Gavilán, are drawn into questions involving science, public health, manipulation, and survival.
What separates Heaven and Earth from traditional science fiction is the way Dr. Riojas blends fictional storytelling with scientific concerns tied to real environmental and health issues. Throughout the book are discussions surrounding cadmium exposure and disease, industrial pollution, food contamination, and the institutions that shape public understanding of potential health risks.
At the same time, the novel explores larger themes involving power, fear, misinformation, exploitation, and humanity’s tendency to ignore difficult truths until consequences become impossible to avoid.
Dr. Riojas, an engineer with decades of professional environmental experience, brings technical knowledge into the story without losing the suspense and imaginative qualities of speculative fiction. The result is a novel that feels part political thriller, part environmental cautionary tale, and part science fiction mystery.
