Entrepreneur Corey Shader Explains How Gen Z is Changing the Workplace

January 28 22:06 2022
The youngest generation is influencing the way companies do business, forcing many to rethink everything. Entrepreneur Corey Shader discusses these changes and more.

Change is a constant in the workplace. With each new generation entering the workforce and each older one departing comes change.

As entrepreneur Corey Shader says, though, a unique situation is currently underway, as a new generation is entering the workforce at a time of great change because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Employers far and wide are experiencing first-hand the changes Gen Z is bringing to the workforce, and those changes are likely to have a profound impact on how everyone works for the foreseeable future.

Younger workers are flipping the script on employers. Instead of employees being made to feel like they are lucky to have a job, they are making employers feel as though they are likely to have them on their staff.

Most members of Gen Z don’t plan to stay at one job for their entire careers. As such, they aren’t afraid to move around and, therefore, don’t feel as though they owe much to a company just because they pay them a salary.

This is forcing companies to think about loyalty in a new way. Before, employers could literally buy loyalty from employees by providing them a salary and then increasing an employee’s income over time through raises and bonuses.

Gen Zers, by contrast, aren’t singularly motivated by money. They seek to work for companies that have beliefs and goals that align with their own. They want to work for inclusive and diverse companies where they feel respected, understood, and valued.

These values and motivations that Gen Z brings to the table have permeated into other generations in the workforce as well, helped along by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic forced most people to work from outside the office, if even for only a short amount of time. All that’s gone on in the world has also influenced people to re-examine their own priorities, with many people concluding that there’s more to life than working hard for a paycheck.

Corey Shader points out that, in response, companies across the country are changing the way they conduct internal business. They’re defining what they want their work culture to be and are working hard from top-to-bottom to initiate internal change.

They’re embracing new approaches to business, including opening the lines of communication, welcoming consistent feedback, and including all levels of employees in some aspect of decision-making.

Companies are embracing new technology, as Corey Shader says, and are rethinking all aspects of what they do and how they do it.

This new wave of change could perhaps be one of the most significant periods in modern history for the workplace. And as many people believe, it’s a wave that is long overdue.
